  6. 1. What is I-Comm ?

  8.    I-Comm is a full feature graphical WWW browser which does 
  9.    not require any kind of SLIP/PPP connections. If you have a 
  10.    PC with Windows, a modem and an Internet shell, VAX, or 
  11.    Freenet account, then you are ready to surf the Internet 
  12.    using I-Comm.  No fancy setup needed.  
  13.  
  14.    I-Comm has a "Mosaic look & feel" interface and can display 
  15.    pages while background downloading images.  I-Comm also has 
  16.    a built-in full feature modem communication program which 
  17.    allows user to switch between a modem communication program 
  18.    and browser by one button click.

  20.    I-Comm is a shareware.

  23. 2. What is I-Comm's minimum system requirements ?
  24.  
  25.    a. 386DX running MS-Windows (tm) 3.1 or above with 4MB Memory 
  26.       and 1MB Disk Space;

  28.    c. A UNIX shell, VAX, or Freenet account with Internet access;

  63.    a. Create a TEMP directory on your hard disk, unzip (pkunzip)
  64.       the I-Comm ZIP file under that directory; 
  65.    b. Start MS-Windows;
  66.    c. Click on the File menu of your Windows Program Manager;
  67.    d. Select Run, then type C:\TEMP\SETUP (or D:\TEMP\SETUP) and 
  68.       press OK.

  71. 5. How to run I-Comm ?
  72.  
  73.    a. Click on the File menu of your Windows Program Manager;
  74.    b. Select Run, then type C:\I-COMM\BIN\I-COMM and press OK.

  76.    *  You also can create an icon for I-Comm by click on File
  77.       menu of your Windows Program Manager, and select new.

  80. 6. Can I use I-Comm with my VAX dial-up account ?

  82.    Yes.

  85. 7. Can I use I-Comm with my Freenet menu-driven dial-up account ?

  87.    Yes.  If you are running a menu-driven Internet account, and 
  88.    don't have access to the shell environment, you can ask your
  89.    service provider to install this "icommshell" program, and 
  90.    call up "icommshell" program from your menu.

  92.    In order to use I-Comm with icommshell program, you will need
  93.    to go to icommshell through your menu system, then switching 
  94.    back to I-Comm Browser by click on the "Browser" button.

  106.    "icomhost" is the Internet World Wide Web service program 
  107.    for I-Comm.  If you don't have Lynx or WWW installed, you 
  108.    need place it in your Internet Shell account search path, 
  109.    before using I-Comm to surf the Internet.

  112. 10. If I don't have "icomhost" installed in my shell account,
  113.    can I still use I-Comm ?
  114.  
  115.    Yes, if you have Lynx or WWW installed in your shell
  116.    account, you can use I-Comm with Lynx or WWW.

  119. 11. Where can I obtain "icomhost" ?

  121.    Currently, we have icomhost for Sun, HP, SGI, BSDI, Linux, 
  122.    SCO, Unix System V for IBM PC, IBM AIX RS6000, DEC OSF/1 
  123.    and DEC Station ULTRIX V4.2A. If you are using other 
  124.    platforms, please let us know, we will try to port it for 
  125.    you.

  179. 12. How to install "icomhost" ?
  180.  
  181.    a. Download "icomhost.gz" to your Internet shell account;
  182.    b. Type "gzip -d icomhost.gz" in your Internet shell account;
  183.    c. Use "chmod 700 icomhost" to make "icomhost" Executable;
  184.    d. Place it in your shell account search path;
  185.    e. Type "icomhost -t" at the command line.  
  186.       If it can download the "icomtest.htm" file properly, 
  187.       that means you have installed "icomhost" program successfully.

  190. 13. After I started I-Comm, how can I connect to Internet ?
  191.  
  192.    STOP: you have to installed Z-modem program "sz", and one
  193.          of following programs: icomhost, lynx or www before you
  194.          using I-Comm to connect to Internet.
  195.  
  196.    a. Click on the Communication menu of I-Comm program;
  197.       Select Com Port Setup, select the correct modem port and
  198.       its setup;
  199.    b. Click on the Communication menu of I-Comm program again;
  200.       Select Phone Book or Manual Dial, connect to your Internet
  201.       provider, use the terminal window in I-Comm to login your
  202.       account;
  203.    c. After login, click on the "Browser" button to bring the HTML 
  204.       window to the front;
  205.       (Note: you cannot close the Terminal window, but you can icon
  206.        it)
  207.    d. Click on the Communication menu, select Internet Host Program
  208.       choose the host program(icomhost, lyxn or www) you have 
  209.       installed in your shell account.  You only need to do this
  210.       once, ignore this step if you already set it up.
  211.    e. Now you are ready to do Internet Surfing by click on the 
  212.       text which is underlined.

  215. 14. How can I switch to I-Comm Terminal window from the Browser
  216.     Window ? Or switch to the Browser window from the Terminal
  217.     Window ?
  218.  
  219.     When you are in I-Comm browser window, click on the "Terminal"
  220.     button to switch to the Terminal window.
  221.     When you are in I-Comm Terminal window, click on the "Browser"
  222.     button to switch to the browser window.

  225. 15. Can I use I-Comm with a direct serial line connection ?
  226.  
  227.     Yes.  Select "Communication --> Com Port Setup" menu, setup
  228.     the com port(at same time, the program will also open the
  229.     port for you), then you are ready to surf the net.
  230.     In case you want to send any command through the serial line,
  231.     you can switch to the I-Comm Terminal Window, type the command
  232.     directly.

  235. 16. How can I STOP a file transfer process ?
  236.  
  237.     While I-Comm is downloading a file from Internet, you can click
  238.     on the "STOP" button to cancel the "remaining file" transfer,
  239.     and click on the "cancel" button of the file transfer dialog
  240.     to stop the current file transfer.
  241.

  243. 17. Does I-Comm save the visited Web pages on my local disk, so I 
  244.     can look at it again later on ?
  245.  
  246.     Yes.  I-Comm saves all the downloaded pages in the cache
  247.     directory.  Turn on the "Use Local Cache File" flag, click on the
  248.     links which you already downloaded, I-Comm will automatically
  249.     load the page from your local disk.
  250.  
  251.     If you want to update the current page, just click on the "Reload"
  252.     button, I-Comm will retrieve that page for you from the Internet.
  253.  
  254.     If you want to clean all/some of the cache files, you can select
  255.     "Options --> Clean Local Cache Files" menu.
  256.  
  257.     There is also a file named "index" in the cache directory which 
  258.     contains the HTTP address and local file name mapping.

  260.     You also can save Web pages with images to other places on your
  261.     hard disk.  For detail, see question #21.

  264. 18. Can I edit the current HTML file in I-Comm ?
  265.  
  266.     Yes.  Select "File --> Edit HTML Source" menu, I-Comm will let you to
  267.     use Windows Notepad to edit the current HTML file.  After finishing
  268.     editing, you can click on the "Reload" button to see what it looks like.

  271. 19. How can I setup my external viewer programs for GIF, MOV, etc ?
  272.  
  273.     Select "File --> Edit Configure File" menu will allow you to use
  274.     Windows Notepad to change the I-Comm configuration file.  A
  275.     simple of the configuration file (i-comm.ini) is included with
  276.     this distribution.

  279. 20. Can I use I-Comm to download a list of files in batch mode ?
  280.  
  281.     Yes.  Select "File --> Batch Download" menu, I-Comm will pop-up
  282.     a batch download dialog box.  You can use the "Right" mouse button
  283.     click on the hyper link to add it into the batch download list.

  286. 21. How can I use I-Comm with "lynx" or "www" instead of icomhost
  287.     program as my Internet Host Program ?
  288.  
  289.     Select "Communication --> Internet Host Program --> Use Lynx" or
  290.     "Communication --> Internet Host Program --> Use www" to setup 
  291.     I-Comm to work with "lynx" or "www".

  294. 22. How to setup my own home page ?
  295.  
  296.     Select "File --> Setup Homepage" menu, in the file dialog,
  297.     select the HTML file you want to use as home page.

  300. 23. Can I have more than one hot list files in I-Comm ?
  301.  
  302.     Yes, you can have unlimited number of hot list files in I-Comm.
  303.     Please use "File --> Setup Hot List File" menu to select the
  304.     hot list file you want to use.  It is a good idea to have 
  305.     different hot list files for information belongs to different
  306.     categories.

  309. 24. How to edit the current hot list file ?
  310.  
  311.     Use "File --> Edit Hot List File" menu, I-Comm will let you
  312.     use Notepad to edit the current hot list file, please keep
  313.     at least two words per line while you are editing the file.

  316. 25. How to save a HTML page to disk WITH IMAGES in I-Comm, and view 
  317.     it later using I-Comm or other browser ?
  318.  
  319.     Use "File --> Save As HTML" menu, it is as easy as save a file.

  322. 26. How to save a HTML page as a plain text file in I-Comm ?
  323.  
  324.     Use "File --> Save As ASCII" menu.

  327. 27. What should I do if the "dial dialog" always showing "dialing"
  328.     message, does not connect ?
  329.  
  330.     This is because I-Comm did not catch the "CONNECT" string.
  331.     Select "Communication --> Dial Setup" menu, in the "Connect 
  332.     String" field, enter "C"(or "c"), or change it to the connect 
  333.     string specified in your modem manual.

  335.     If this still does not work, try following:
  336.       . Select "Communication --> Com Port Setup" to open the port;
  337.       . Click on the "Terminal" button to switch to Terminal window;
  338.       . Type "atdt <phone number>" in the Terminal to dial out.

  341. 28. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve any page from the
  342.     Internet, showing "waiting response from http server" message ?
  343.  
  344.     Please check the selection under "Communication --> Internet
  345.     Host Program" menu, make sure you selected the right Internet 
  346.     host program.  For example, if you have lynx installed in your 
  347.     shell account, you should select "Use Lynx".
  348.

  350. 29. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve any page from the
  351.     Internet ?
  352.  
  353.     First, in your shell account, you have to have one of the 
  354.     following program:  
  355.           . icomhost from Talent Communications, Inc.
  356.           . OR lynx
  357.       . OR www
  358.  
  359.     Then you test one of these programs by downloading the page 
  360.     at:
  361.           http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm
  362.  
  363.     * If you have icomhost, the command you need to type in your
  364.       shell account is:
  365.       icomhost -a http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -f icomm.htm
  366.       
  367.     * If you have lynx, the command you need to type in your
  368.       shell account is:
  369.       lynx http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -source -dump > icomm.htm
  370.       (For VAX: lynx http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -source -dump)

  372.     * If you have www, the command you need to type in your
  373.       shell account is:
  374.       www http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -dump > icomm.htm
  375.       (For VAX: www http://www.best.com/~icomm/icomm.htm -o icomm.htm)

  377.     Make sure the program can download the "icomm.htm" file.
  378.  
  379.     In addition to the program mentioned above, you also need a
  380.     Z-modem file transfer program "sz".
  381.  
  382.     After you obtained the "sz" program, type "sz icomm.htm" in 
  383.     I-Comm Terminal, click on the "Download" button in I-Comm 
  384.     to download icomm.htm file.
  385.     Make sure I-Comm Terminal can received the file.

  388. 30. What should I do if I-Comm cannot retrieve inline images ?
  389.     ("Bad CRC" error)
  390.  
  391.     This is because the sz program is having some problems to
  392.     download binary files. Try to use "sz -be" in 
  393.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup Z-Modem Download Cmd." 
  394.     field, this will setup I-Comm to use "sz -be" to download 
  395.     files.  You can also use other "sz" options here.
  396.     It is a good idea to ask your sysAdmin what "sz" options are 
  397.     needed for Z-modem file downloading.
  398.  
  399.  
  400. 31. How to setup I-Comm to download all the files to a "tmp"
  401.     directory in my shell account ?
  402.  
  403.     This can be done in two ways:
  404.     a. change to directory "tmp" before switching to I-Comm
  405.        browser.
  406.     b. enter "cd tmp" in the "Command Prefix" field under
  407.        "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  408.        I-Comm to issue the "cd tmp" command every time before
  409.        it start to download a file from the Internet.
  410.  
  411.     * It is a good idea to setup I-Comm to download all the 
  412.       files to a "tmp" directory in your shell account.  Because
  413.       it makes the file cleanup easier in case something goes
  414.       wrong.
  415.  
  416.  
  417. 32. How to setup I-Comm to set the "rm" alias back after each
  418.     file download ?
  419.  
  420.     Enter "alias rm 'rm -i'" in the "Command Suffix" field under
  421.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  422.     I-Comm to issue the "alias rm 'rm -i'" command every time
  423.     after it finishes downloading a file from the Internet.
  424.  
  425.     * Don't worry about this setting if you did not setup "rm"
  426.       alias in your shell account.
  427.

  429. 33. How to setup I-Comm to keep all the files downloaded to
  430.     my shell account ?
  431.  
  432.     Enter "ls" in the "File Remove Command" field under
  433.     "Communication --> Host Program Setup".  This will setup
  434.     I-Comm to keep all the files in your shell account.
  435.  
  436.     * Don't do this unless you really have a lot of disk
  437.       space in your shell account.
  438.

  440. 34. Why register I-Comm ?
  441.  
  442.     a. You get the FULL FEATURE "registered" version of the 
  443.        software in which the "registration" dialog will not pop 
  444.        up every time you start and exit the program
  445.     b. You will get free upgrades until I-Comm version 1.99.
  446.     c. Priority for adding new features to I-Comm.
  447.     d. It will support us continuously improving I-Comm.  We plan
  448.        to support HTML3 and Netscape tags before version 1.99.
